Pre-Licensure BSN
The UofL School of Nursing BSN Pre-licensure program (formally known as the Traditional BSN) offers a dynamic blend of theoretical and practical training, preparing students for successful nursing careers. As citizens of a larger community, our focus is to address the complex health care needs of diverse populations. Students graduate prepared to demonstrate excellence for the benefit of clients across the lifespan. Our BSN program also provides the necessary foundation for master's and doctoral degrees in nursing.
Innovative and Specialized Faculty
Students have access to innovative Patient Simulation and Standardized Patient Centers. Faculty have the highest qualifications and conduct research in their areas of specialization.
By including a core of knowledge in the humanities and the behavioral, physical, and biological sciences, as well as theory and practice of professional nursing graduates of the BSN program will be prepared to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN).

Frequently Asked Questions
Students may attend full or part-time while enrolled in lower division portion of the nursing program. Upper division requires full-time enrollment for all five consecutive semesters.
The Pre-licensure BSN is designed to be a four-year program. Students enrolled in full-time throughout the duration of the program can complete in 4 years. Students enrolled in part-time coursework while in lower division will take longer to complete.
Effective fall 2019, a minimum cumulative overall undergraduate grade point average of 2.8 is required, and a minimum 3.0 nursing program grade point average is required for consideration into upper division.

The applicant pool credentials vary with each admit term. The applicants are ranked on their program grade point average. The number of applications has ranged from 90-160 for Louisville and 20-35 for the Owensboro campus. Historically, the program grade point averages have been over 3.3 for admitted students, though this GPA does not guarantee or limit admission into Upper Division.
Students that are not admitted into upper division are advised to meet with their academic nursing advisor to plan a strategy on improving the quality of their application or other options. This may include repeating courses, looking into other health profession related majors or other nursing programs.
Students may transfer courses from other regionally accredited institutions. All courses are evaluated at the university level through the Transfer Department in the Office of Undergraduate Admissions for course equivalency.
Yes, in addition to the undergraduate tuition rate, the upper division nursing program includes lab and clinical fees, incidentals such as uniforms, stethoscopes, technology software and hardware, and textbooks.

Yes. The School of Nursing's technology requirement is the same as the University's.

Graduates from the UofL School of Nursing are prepared to apply for RN licensure upon graduation; however, educational preparation does not guarantee professional licensure.
